Black History Month: Young professionals’ challenges and opportunities—Experience, access, and finding your voice in the credit union movement

Black History Month is a time to honor legacy. For the credit union movement, an industry built on access and community, it is an opportunity to reflect on how we are developing the next generation of leaders. For young professionals (YPs), the journey is filled with both promise and persistent challenges.
Navigating challenges and finding opportunity
Early in my career, one challenge I faced was navigating the credit union industry while feeling unsure of where I truly belonged. That changed when I had the opportunity to intern with the African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC). Working alongside President and CEO, Ms. Renée Sattiewhite, I was exposed early to a wide range of experiences, including attending the Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) and meeting AACUC credit union leaders and legends such as Sheilah Montgomery, Michael Hale, and Pete Crear. By performing well during my internship and later returning to lead the program, I gained access to people, spaces, and opportunities I never imagined being part of.
Being in those positions allowed me to have dinners with CEOs and engage in meaningful conversations that expanded both my network and confidence. Experiences like these are invaluable; they demonstrate the importance of early exposure, mentorship, and taking initiative. More importantly, they are opportunities I hope other young professionals get to experience, helping them see that leadership spaces are attainable with preparation and dedication.
Challenges facing young professionals
While my path benefited from mentorship and opportunity, many YPs face barriers such as limited experience, access to professional development, and networking obstacles. Some credit unions or leaders do not provide consistent support for learning, stretch assignments, or leadership exposure. Networking can also feel intimidating, especially for YPs who may experience limited representation in leadership spaces. Without guidance or inclusion, it’s easy to feel unheard or disconnected from opportunities.
Another big challenge is feeling like your voice doesn’t matter. Young professionals have new ideas about technology, member engagement, and inclusion, but the way some organizations are structured or rely on traditional practices can make speaking up difficult. If YPs feel they can’t share their ideas, it can hold back new thinking and lower engagement.
Opportunities through engagement and ownership
The credit union movement offers meaningful opportunities for YPs who are willing to engage intentionally. Getting involved with credit union leagues, professional associations, and YP councils provides access to education and leadership development. Networking works best when seen as building a community. Showing up and supporting peers helps create real relationships. These relationships can lead to mentorship and long-term opportunities.
A shared responsibility
Developing young professionals is a shared responsibility. Leaders must create environments that encourage learning, provide access to professional development, and invite diverse perspectives. Supporting YPs is not just mentorship—it is a strategic investment in the future of the credit union movement. At the same time, YPs must advocate for themselves by building and leveraging relationships, speaking up about their goals and development needs, and consistently showing up, putting in the work, and staying engaged even when growth feels challenging.
Black History Month reminds us that progress is built through respect, access, opportunity, and voice. By addressing challenges and embracing opportunities like internships, networking, mentorship, and meaningful exposure, young professionals can help shape a more inclusive and resilient credit union movement for the future.
